The Challenge
Veolia Water Technologies partnered with a Yuengling Brewery to develop a new wastewater treatment system at their original Brewery location in Pottsville, Pennsylvania to reduce the BOD and TSS load that was being discharged to the municipality’s wastewater treatment facility.
The Solution
The Biobed® Advanced EGSB (Expanded Granular Sludge Bed System) anaerobic system was selected by the client as the best technology to treat the brewery’s wastewater stream. The technology selection was also based on the process reliability and experience with a similar Biothane® high-rate system that is operating at the client’s other brewing location.
The Biobed® Advanced EGSB utilizes biological organisms within the primary treatment step to reduce BOD/COD. After primary treatment, wastewater is then treated with Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) to remove additional suspended solids.
The Results
The anaerobic plant is achieving consistent removal rates to help Yuengling Brewery reach its BOD removal goals, by continuously removing >95% SCOD. Additionally, the system produces biogas as a byproduct that is used to fuel a CHP (combined heat and power) generator to create ‘green’ electricity to offset energy costs.
